When God made Adam and Eve they were naked and unashamed. This implies more than just the absence of clothes. This also meant there was the absence of fear, distrust, suspicion, and insecurity. Adam and Eve were naked in the sense that they could be vulnerable, put their guards down and not worry about being taken advantage of. There were no invisible walls that separated them. None of the masks that individuals wear to conceal their true motives and identities were available because they were completely nonexistent.
When Adam looked at his wife, he could indeed say “bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh”. Adam and his wife were naked and unashamed because although they were two, they were one. Nothing was in between them. But unfortunately things didn’t stay that way.
After reading Genesis 3:6-12 we can identify three actions with three explanations for the actions within the passage. Upon eating the fruit of the tree which they were told not to eat, Adam and Eve covered themselves, hid themselves, and they accused, blamed and divided themselves. The Bible then goes on to offer insight into their motives for such behavior and in verses 7 and 10 we see why. They essentially put up all of these walls because now “they knew that they were naked.”
However, after closer examination we see that it is not solely their nakedness that caused Adam and Eve to separate from one another and God. After all, Genesis 2:25 tells us “they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” The question then is what new ingredient caused this naked and unashamed union to become naked and ashamed individuals. My brothers and sisters it is clear. Sin is the culprit.
Sin has a way of making us all feel ashamed. The only difference is that nowadays we don’t use fig leaves and trees to cover ourselves up, instead we tend to hide, cover and divide ourselves with lies, alcohol, sex, drugs, violence, going to work 24/7, and much more than I could possibly include in this editorial.
Because we’re ashamed we can’t have real relationships with anyone because we get so caught up trying to keep everything surface. We refuse to open up ourselves and be vulnerable because we don’t want anyone to get close or they might hurt us. Because we’re ashamed nobody wants to be around us because we’re always talking about how bad life is treating us.
This shame and guilt is caused when we sin. Additionally, when we violate personal standards (we aren’t ready to call sin yet) and don’t know how to deal with our failure, you can call Mary Kay because there will be a cover-up.
But thank God He said He’ll never leave us nor forsake us. He would never sit back and let us wallow in our own self-pity. Even though Adam and Eve covered themselves, they didn’t stay in the green underwear for long because look what happened in Genesis 3:20. God dressed them in 100 percent genuine lamb skin which He made Himself.
And if you’re anything like me and wonder, “well where did God get the lamb skin anyway? Was there a Wal-mart in the garden of Eden that I didn’t know about?” Let’s just take a minute and think about it. You can only get lamb skin from a dead lamb. When Adam and Eve sinned the only reason they didn’t die was because there was a lamb slain on the spot whose blood washed away all their sins.
I’m so glad today to know that the blood of Jesus Christ- the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world- is still strong enough to wash away your sins and mine every time we fail. Knowing and understanding how the blood of Jesus covers today will free us from the encumbrances we’ve set up in our lives and open our hearts to love God and others with no reservation.
The truth is many of us today are naked. We are some shameful, miserable “sad-ventists” held in bondage to the guilt of the past. But the bible says “you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free”. The only reason some of us still aren’t free is because although we’ve been forgiven, there are still traces in our lives (green underwear) called guilt that God needs to remove and replace with that Holy Lamb skin straight from the throne of God.
So my admonition to you today is to pray and ask God to take all of that guilt and I promise you won’t regret it. Because that my friends, is the “Naked Truth”. Just wait til’ He gets His “Hanes” on you!
Thanks for reading and remember God loves you.
